Vazzola

Description

Vazzola is a municipality in the province of Treviso, located on the left bank of the River Piave, and extends on a plain crossed by several rivers, offering several nature and cultural trails to follow on foot or by bike between streams, waterfalls and ancient windmills and the chance to discover numerous picturesque villages.
The area was inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the discovery of numerous findings. Traces attest that the Romans settled here, divided the farmlands into centuries and enriched the area with essential arterial roads. After the fall of the Roman Empire the territories were exposed to the invasion of hordes of Huns, Lombards and Hungarians. Around year 1000, the town was donated to the Bishop of Ceneda and then was assigned to the noble feudal families of the Collalto and the Camino. In 1339 it became part of the dominion of Venice, and went through a period of great peace, at least until 1779, year in which to Napoleon's conquest followed a period under the domain of the Austrian Government. Becoming part of the Kingdom of Italy the town submitted a new phase of peace and development, interrupted by World War I, a time when the surrounding area was directly involved in the clashes.

Attractions:
- the Oratory of St. John the Baptist was built in the XV century on the ruins of an existing building, which is still clearly visible on the lower floor. It features three naves and a façade with its impressive portal surmounted by an arch supported by columns. Immediately above this, embraced by an arch, there is a rose window. The structure has two levels designed to give the effect of a great homogeneity. On the lower, wider, it is possible to distinguish between groups of decorated columns with small openings and a tympanum. The upper part is joined to the main body by two archways. It is complemented by a gable topped by minute statues. Inside are preserved frescoes of the artists Da Milano and Fiumani. The Gothic Bell Tower was built after the original one was ruined during the First World War;
- the Church of San Francesco in Tezze di Piave;
- the Church of St Martin in Visnà.
- the XVII century Palazzo Tiepolo, now seat of the Town Hall. Inside are preserved beautiful frescos by the artist Pellegrini;
- the XVIII century Palazzo Concini-Malanotte in Tezze, to which is adjoined a XVII century Chapel;
- Casa Fossa in Visnà;
- the Roman Column;
- Palazzo Righetti;
- Villa Ghetta
