Varedo

Description

Town in the province of Monza and Brianza, located along the highway between Milan and Lentate, in the direction of Como, Varedo is an important economic center of the Lombardy region, with its ancient origins: in fact, the discovery in 1972 near the waters of the Seveso, tools of various types and the remains of piles, that date back to 4000/5000 years ago, evidence that the area was inhabited since the Neolithic times. During the same period, the remains of a Roman necropolis with tombs and funerary items of the Lombard period were also unearthed. In the XIII century, Varedo was the scene of clashes between the the Torriani and the Visconti for the domain Milan. In more modern times it became part of the fief of the Spanish Marquis Manriquez de Mendoza and from 1676, it belonged to the Crivelli di Agliate.

Among the sites of interest, worth of mention:
- The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, built in 1712 and later expanded on a design by Bagatti Fausto Valsecchi (1915). The building is an important example of a mix of styles: Romanesque to Gothic and Lombard. From the main nave hangs a fine crucifix of the XVII century.
- The Church of Santa Maria Regina, in the district of Valera;
- The Church of the Annunciation of Mary;
- Numerous villas, including Villa Medici, Villa Agnese and Villa Bagatti Valsecchi, built in past centuries by the nobility of Milan, who had chosen Varedo as their holiday residences.
