Terlano

Description

Municipality of the province of Bolzano, famous for its production of fine wines, located at the foot of the valley of the Val d'Adige, Terlano (Terlan in German) is known not only for the abundant production of apples and grapes but also for its excellent asparagus. An ideal departure point for hiking or mountain biking along the mountain paths and through the woods, combined to the visit of the local wineries, scattered throughout the area. The town, lying in the valley, is dominated by the steeple of the church.
The town's name probably derives from the Latin name "Taurilius" and was documented for the first time in 923.
Sites of Interest:
- the Parish Church, dedicated to Mary of the Assumption, in late Gothic style, is flanked by a XIII century Bell Tower in Romanesque style; while inside are preserved a series of frescoes in Gothic style of the School of Bolzano (influenced by a mixture of Italian and German styles);
- the Parish Church of the Sacred Heart in the district of Settequerce;
- the Convent of the Teutonic Order with the adjoining Church of St. Anthony of Padua;
- the three towers of Vilpiano (the little bell tower of the old church, the new bell tower of the modern church and the tower of the barracks of the fire brigade);
- the Aaterfall that originates from Montezoccolo;
- the ruins of Castel Greifenstein
