San Lazzaro di Savena

Description

City of the province of Bologna, located near to the first foothills of the Emilia region and crossed by the rivers Zena and Idice, the first settlement of San Lazzaro di Savena was founded in the XI century and built around a hospital for lepers, established by some members Order of St. Lazarus. According to the belief of the time, the hospital was built east of the city, believing that the wind, blowing in that direction, could carry the infection away. It became an independent municipality in 1827.
Not to miss in the area of San Lazzaro:
- the Cavern of the Spipola;
- the chalk outcrops of the Farneto, in whose caves were found traces of a human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age;
- the karst period complex of Croara, where in about 200 caverns, numerous stone artefacts have been traced from the Paleolithic, the Bronze and the Villanova civilization Ages, many of which are exhibited in the Museum of Prehistory entitled to "Luigi Donini.
