Description

Fattoria Ca' Rossa is situated on the charming hillside of Bertinoro. The Masottis have been working on the market of vine and olive growing for three generations. The family originally comes from Monte Casale, a hamlet in the municipal territory of Bertinoro. After the destruction of all Italian and European vineyards due to the scourge of phylloxera, we were the first ones to replant our vines in Bertinoro in 1935. All the vineyards were planted with a variety of Albana called Gentile di Bertinoro (gentile means kind). The olive trees were planted in the same period. Until the 50's the grapes were mainly sold, and just a small part was used to make wine for our family and friends. Those were hard times indeed. Italy had just got out of a war that had devastated the economy, territory and above all the morale of the people.

The only thing to do was forget the past, get down to work and think of the future. At the end of the 50's Ubaldo, my father, realised that if we wanted to make the business profitable, we needed not only to produce grapes and sell them, but also to make wine and sell it. It was then that he started, between 1959 and 1960, the first "modern" cellar, using the most advanced technologies available at the time. Fattoria Ca' Rossa started its new course with the harvest of 1960. Since 1997 I, Massimo Masotti, and my wife Liana Landini, who is a sommelier of the AIS (Association of Italian Sommeliers), have been running the farm. Our lands spread for 25 hectares on the hillside of Bertinoro, in an ideal position where several elements, such as the soil composition and the climate (sunlight, dew, rain), help to make this site one of the most famous gran cru of wine growing in Emilia-Romagna as well as being ideal for olive growing. Our main pride is that our sales are exclusively based on our production.

We carry out all the wine growing stages: vine-growing (in compliance with EU regulation No.2078), winemaking and direct marketing of the product.

The cellar where we make and sell our wine lies on the outskirts of Bertinoro, in Via Cellaimo 735. The marvellous view of the hills of Bertinoro, where our vineyard is situated, helps to create a different atmosphere, heady and unmistakable, which the , earth turns into wine: Albana gentile di Bertinoro, Pagadebit, Trebbiano, Sangiovese, Cagnina, Barbera,Cabernet Sauvignon. From the Refosco wine (locally called Cagnina) we obtain a superb grape liqueur named "Brunoro". From the Sangiovese wine we produce a choice vinegar for connoisseurs (the wine slowly drips onto wood shavings and is then aged in durmast barrels). Finally from our olives (frantoio, leccino, moraiolo varieties) we obtain Bertinolio, a first-rate extra-virgin oil. The fruits are stripped off the plant by hand and cold-pressed immediately in a stone olive press. We only produce about 700 litres per year, but the quality is definitely higher. We have about 400 olive trees.

In the summertime we welcome groups of tourists of different nationalities, who come from the seaside resorts of the nearby Riviera to taste the typical products of Bertinoro in the park of our cellar, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. In the stillness of our garden they find an ideal place to relax and savour our wines, and the other typical gastronomic products of this area.
