Tollo

Description

An important wine production center in the province of Chieti, Tollo is located in a hilly area between the river Arielli and stream Venna. Almost totally destroyed during the bombing of World War II, there are few and rare traces, that help architectural historians, to clarify the origins of the village. Although some support the Roman origins, another more reliable school of thought believes, however, that it derives from the presence here of several Crusaders from the French town of Tulle between the XI and XII centuries. In 1566 the town suffered the attacks of Turkish pirates, during which the traditions narrate that a miraculous apparition of Our Lady of the Rosary, saved Tollo from a certain defeat . In the XVIII century the town was under the rule of the Bourbons, and was included in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Between 1707 and 1775 it was ceded to the Family of Roger de Hauteville and later became a fief owned by the Barons of the Nolli Family.

Not to miss:
- the Church of Santa Marina, built in 1450 and completely destroyed during the bombing of the Second World War. It was later rebuilt beside the cemetery;
- the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, which houses a beautiful statue of Our Lady of the Rosary;
- the Baronial Palazzo of the Nolli Family.
