Fondo

Description

One of the major city centres of the Val di Non, Fondo is a beautiful mountain municipality in the province of Trento, located in a strategic position between the Middle and the Low Anaunia and the Alpine passes of Palade and Mendola. It is a commercial and tourist center active all year round, surrounded by unspoilt nature made of pine forests, green hills and deep valleys.
Although it boasts ancient origins, certified by archaeological finds of prehistoric and Roman times, the first permanent settlement was built only in 1516, under the domain of Emperor Maximilian I.
In Spring and Summer hikers and mountain bikers can spend pleasant moments along the tracks and trails of the Val di Non, enjoying at the same time a wonderful view of the Dolomites. The Emerald Lake and the slopes of the nearby Passo della Mandola, however, are the ideal place for lovers of Winter sports.

Sites of Interest:
- the picturesque old town, with its valuable wall paintings that adorn the exterior walls of several houses, all dating back to the XIV - XVI centuries. Among these, worthy of mention, are one of religious nature, entitled to St. James of Compostela, to thank him for the escaped danger from the plague in the XV century, and another of profane matrix, on the façade of the house Bertagnolli, artwork of the artist Riemenschneider;
- the Parish Church of St. Martin, whose original structure dates back the year 1000, has been demolished and expanded, over the centuries, to meet the needs of a growing population. The current building is the result of the last reconstruction, dated 1853. The Bell Tower, however, was built in several stages, starting in 1447, and its completion took more than three centuries;
- the Baroque Church of San Rocco;
- the small Church of Saint Lucia, situated on the hill, away from the city center, with outdoor paintings dedicated to St. Christopher, dating from the XIV century and a XVI century wooden altar;
- the Canyon of the Rio Sass, a deep gorge that cuts through the main centre of Fondi, dug by the unceasing flow of the waters of the stream that crosses the town. Since 2011, it can be admired thanks to a series of cantilevered platforms, stairs and steps, that permit a closer interaction with the here present rocks and flora (stalactites and stalagmites, fossils, potholes, waterfalls, moss and ferns);

- Lake Saint Mary (or lake Tret);
- the Emerald Lake.
