Compiano

Description

A beautiful and picturesque medieval village in the province of Parma, entirely surrounded by fortified walls and dominated by the imposing castle, Compiano (from "campo plano" or plain field) dominates the Valtaro and was already mentioned in documents of the XI century. In the Middle Ages, the town was honored with the privilege of minting its own currency and had a public schools and a pawnshop. In the last years of the XVII century it passed to the Duchy of Parma with all domains of the Landi and the Doria-Pamphili. Under the rule of Maria Luigia, the Castle was used as a state prison where riot conspirators were imprisoned in 1821.
