Description

Santa Cristina in Val Gardena (St. Christina in Gröden in German) is the smallest village in Val Gardena, in the province of Bolzano, located on a sunny plateau in front of the Sassolungo. It is a popular holiday destination, especially for those looking for peace and relaxation in the Summer. In fact, here, it is possible to enjoy breathtaking views while traveling around the well-kept mountain trails and take advantage of delicacy tasting of the local specialties, even after making a trip up to the high altitude pastures. In Winter, skiers and all snow sport fans can enjoy cross-country skiing on the slopes of Val Gardena and the Dolomites Superski complex.
The isolation of the valley has allowed the formation and the consolidation of their customs and traditions that have been preserved over the centuries, featuring uniquely these resorts of Val Gardena. Just think of the ancient Ladin language, still spoken in the valley, was born at the time of Roman rule.
Some recent archaeological finds, in Plan de Frea, dating back to prehistoric times, postdating the first settlements in Val Gardena 6000 BC, it is, nevertheless, sporadic settlements of nomadic hunters who preferred to move in these areas mostly in Summer .

Sites of Interest:
- the Church of Santa Cristina, the oldest parish in the valley, dates back to the XII century, although it has been subject to numerous expansions and renovations over the centuries. Of the original Romanesque building remains only the Bell Tower. Superb is the high altar, artwork of the brothers Vinatzer (1690);
- the Castle of Gardena (Fischburg), located between Selva and Santa Cristina, a hunting lodge and Summer residence built in the Renaissance style. At present the structure is privately owned and does not permit visits;
- the Chapel on Monte Pana, built by the Austrian architect Franz Baumann, in Bauhaus-style;
- the equatorial spherical Sundial, with a diameter of two meters on Monte Pana, which marks the time at Santa Cristina and also of another 60 cities around the World.
