Polizzi Generosa

Description

Polizzi Generosa is a town in the province of Palermo, set in the Madonie Natural Park. It developed during the Early Middle Age around a castle built by Ruggero I in 1076. Federico II added to the place name (which probably derives from the Greek word "polis") the adjective "Generosa", referring to the fertility of the land and the generosity of the inhabitants. During the centuries it was both a city of the royal domain and a feudal one.
Inside the Mother Church, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and built in the XVII century on a pre-existing construction, it is possible to admire a valuable picture by Giuseppe Salerno "Madonna del Rosario", a part of the sarcophagus of San Gandolfo, who died here in the XIII century, and a bas-relief representing the Last Supper, both by Domenico Gagini.
The Church of San Francesco houses two chaples by Gagini.
We also mention the Church of Santissimo Salvatore (XVI century), the Church of Santissima Trinità dei Cavalieri Teutonici, with a polyptych by Gagini and the former XV century Convent of the Dominicans.
