Pila

Description

Pila is a tiny mountain village in the province of Vercelli, located just over 700 meters above sea level, in Valsesia, close to Scopello, Pode and Pettinengo. From the village departs a chairlift that climbs to the ski resort of Alpe di Mera, located at 1550 meters, surrounded by greenery and unspoiled nature. The slopes gently draw tracks along the dorsal of the mountains, which are the perfect setting for both beginners as well as expert skiers and the area is equipped with artificial snow canons that allow its visitors to indulge in snowboarding, mountaineering, skiing and hiking in the woods with snowshoes. There are many hiking trails that feature various degrees of difficulty, including the walk to the time of the Cima Ometto, situated at about 1900 meters above sea level, which is one of the most popular destinations thanks to the chance to admire a fantastic landscape from that privileged position.
The discovery of artifacts in San Grato, dating back to Imperial times, witness the presence of the Romans in the area. Pila was for a long period under the domain of Marquis of the neighboring municipality Romagnano and at the beginning of the XV century it was sold by Gian Galeazzo Visconti to the noble Francesco Barbavara of Novara, who was granted with the title of Count di Pietre Gemelle. Reclaimed by Filippo Maria Visconti after the exile of Barbavara, the fief was ceded to the Tornielli Family, that built the famous castle of Sopramonte.

No to miss:

The Church of St. Anthony, a beautiful country chapel.
The Oratory of Santa Caterina, located in Failungo Inferiore.
The Church of San Pietro.
The old Romanesque bridge with a guarded portico.
The ruins of the medieval Castle of Sopramonte.
The touristic Reserve between the municipalities of Pila and Scopello.
