Moena

Description

Called the "Fairy of the Dolomites", Moena (Moena in Ladino) is the most important center of the Val di Fassa, both from a demographic point of view, as for commercial and administrative ones. It is situated in a beautiful green valley, in defense of the Valley, and surrounded by some of the most beautiful Dolomite groups, including the Rosengarten, the Latemar and the Sella. Closely related to the ancient Ladin traditions, like all the other towns in the Val di Fassa, Moena is a resort ideal all year round: in Summer, in fact, there are several paths and trails in contact with nature that can be discovered on foot or by mountain bike in winter, snow lovers can try their hand along the slopes of the Ski Area Lusia, Ski Area San Pellegrino, with the connections of the Three Valleys ski area.
The discovery of traces of human settlements dating back to the Mesolithic and the remains of castles dating from the Rhaetian (the latter particularly common in contiguous municipalities), we can say that the Valley was inhabited before the arrival of the Roman troops. After the fall of the Roman Empire, alternated in power Lombards and Franks and right in the Carolingian period, dates back to the foundation of churches: in particular Moena to the parish of San Giovanni di Fassa, in turn associated with the Diocese of Brixen. However, in written sources in 1164 it is clear that at the time Moena be referred to the Diocese of Trento. For a long time the community of Val di Fassa enjoyed a decent autonomy, being able to manage in a quasi-autonomous own resources and with the advent of Napoleon, the age-old rules and institutions were replaced by the municipalities. Came under the control of the Italian state after the First World War.
Famous for local delicious delicatessen such as the Puzzone of Moena, a cheese awarded the Slow Food Presidium.

Sites of Interest:
- the Church of St. Vigil, consecrated by the Prince-Bishop of Trento, Adalpreto II in 1164, dominates the town with its Gothic Bell Tower. Inside, among the valuable artworks, stands the main altar of the local artist Valentino Rovisi, a pupil of Tiepolo.
- the Church of St. Wolfgang, the oldest building in the country according to tradition, it houses a most valuable XV century frescoe, brought to light during the recent restoration;
- the charming Old Town centre with its old buildings (Casa Ramon and House of Duty);
- the Bottega of Pinter (the barrel workshop), of Domenico Dellantonio, now seat of a museum where it is possible to admire the old working methods and a collection of tools.
