Mercogliano is the natural southern entrance point to the Regional Park of Partenio.
Its historic centre is rich in alleys, popular houses and noble residences.
The most important monument is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montevergine, where thousands of pilgrims from the whole of Italy flock each year to worship the Black Madonna, "Mamma Schiavona", a 13th-century painting on wood depicting the Blessed Virgin.
The Sanctuary was founded at the start of the 12th century by William of Vercelli, buried in the crypt, who came to the mountain top to meditate in a quiet place.
Do not miss to visit the Sanctuary monks' winter home: the Abbatial Palace of Loreto, dating back to 1735.
