Bormio

Description

Popular ski resort in the province of Sondrio, Bormio is located at the intersection between Valfurva and the Valley of the Adda, not far from the border with Switzerland and Austria, in the Stelvio National Park. Already praised by Pliny the Elder for the preparatory properties of its thermal waters, in the Middle Ages was the seat of a Contado, relatively independent from the rest of the Valtellina. Today it is not only an international ski sport resort but features also modern and efficient hospitality services.

No to miss:
- the Parish Church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio, of medieval origins and completely rebuilt in the XVII century, because damaged during the Spanish invasion. The church has a green stone doorway and features on the front gable, the statues of two saints, which are located in specific niches. The main altar has a large carved wooden tabernacle in Baroque style.
- the Church of St. Anthony (or of the crucifix), dating from the XIV century;
- the Church of Sasello, dedicated to the Visitation of Mary to St. Elizabeth and dates from the XIV century;
- the desecrated Church of Santa Barbara, today it is the painter Elvio Mainardi's studio;
- the Romanesque Church of San Vitale (XII century);
- the XV century Church of the Holy Spirit;
- the Praetorian Palace (also Palatium), at present seat of the Comunità Montana of Alta Valtellina and once was the residence of the mayor and the lieutenants and the Court;
- the Kuerc, a medieval loggia and heart of the city's civic life;
- the Bajona Tower (or Tower of the Hours), which dominates the main square in Bormio;
- the Civic Museum, near the ancient and noble castle De Simoni;
- the Bridge Combo, already mentioned in 1300, overlooking the creek Frodolfo;
- the Torre Alberti (XIII century).
