Penna in Teverina

Description

The town's name derives from the Latin word "pinna" (arrow), while the second part refers to the presence of the river Tiber in the area. Municipality in the province of Terni, located on the crest of a hill, on the border with Lazio, surrounded by the tranquility and the beautiful green countryside of Umbria. Penna in Teverina is a small medieval town that still retains its original structure intact, founded in the Valley of the Tiber, close to the point where it merges with the Rio Grande. The beauty of the landscape and the presence of important medieval historical elements attract tourists as an optional visit during tours of Rome and its surrounding areas.
The discovery of Roman remains have allowed to historians to attest that, in this area, there was a port. Although the original settlement had late medieval origins, the first documented existence of a small housing district date back to the XI century. In the Middle Ages, Penna in Teverina belonged to the Colonna; in 1492 Stefano Colonna assigned the lands to the Amelia, and later sold it to the Orsini. During this period the town flourished and the urban structure was embellished with decorative elements attributed to the Renaissance. The small center was finally assigned to the Marquis of Gallo. It was never a completely autonomous municipality, always at the center of arguments between the Papal States and the Lords of the nearby town of Amelia.
