Prato allo Stelvio

Description

At the mouth of the Valley of Trafoi, south-west of the Val Venosta, and near the Stelvio National Park, rises the small village of Prato allo Stelvio.
The town's name "Prada", assigned in 1187, derives from the Latin word "prata" (meadows).
In the Middle Ages, the small town occupied an important role due to its strategic location on an important main commercial route junction.
Nestled in the scenic purity of a mountain environment, Prad is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. Visitors can take advantage of a network of paths, in addition to simple walks, allows excursions at high altitude in the Ortler region and in the Stelvio National Park. However, those who want to relax, the mountain streams offer fishing possibilities or one can consider to take a relaxing bike ride.
In this dream place it is possible to admire the spectacular sight of 14 mountains peaks over three thousand meters high and a valley with flora and fauna to be observed for its uniqueness.
Although a typical mountain village that has managed to preserve its characteristics over time, Prato has been able to catch up with its surrounding competitors, offering to tourists a variety of attractive services, including the "Aquaprad", in which different types of aquariums show the 'fascinating world of water and the fish fauna of the territory.

Sites of interest include:
- the ruins of Castel Montechiaro (Burgruine Lichtenberg), built in the XIII century;
- the XII century Romanesque Church of San Giovanni with its sturdy bell tower. The building exterior is decorated with a fresco of 1410, whilst within it preserves a valuable XIII century Romanesque fresco and Gothic wooden statues of the early XVI century;
- the XV century Parish Church in the village of Agumes-Agums, flanked by an elegant Gothic tower built in 1493 and a side chapel built in 1705;
- the XV century Parish Church in the village of Lichtenberg Lichtenberg-decorated with frescoes dating back to the same period.
