Marmorata (Ravello)

Description

Marmorata is a coastal hamlet of Ravello, located between Minori and Atrani, surrounded by lush lemon groves, vineyards and Mediterranean vegetation, overlooking the sea. The place name probably derives from the murmur of a waterfall located in a deep inlet.
According to some, the estate belonging to the Rufolo family spread out up to Marmorata, located just perpendicularly to the famous Villa Rufolo and, it is said, that during their banquets, they used to throw the dishes down into the ravine to show their guest their wealth (but then they retrieve them at a later time).
Many documents testify the presence of a small mill since the XI century; transformed into a paper mill during the XV century, it kept on working until the ‘80s of the last century, when the property became a hotel.
The rocks above the sea were the perfect base for the construction of watchtowers, part of the coastal defensive complex designed during the viceregal period, in order to defend the population from the frequent raids. One of the best preserved id the so called Scarpariello tower, which hosted many celebrities, such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Greta Garbo, Umberto II of Savoy and Stokpawsky.
