Caorle

Caorle a Natale

Caorle a Natale

Description

The name is the diminutive of the Latin word "capra" (goat) with the suffix "-ulus" (which refers to the particular aspect of land, that vaguely resembles the horns of the goats or, perhaps, to the wild animals that grazed here in abundance) .
Municipality in the province of Venice, located at the mouth of the river Livenza, Caorle, at short distance from Portogruaro, Bibione and Eraclea, is crossed by the Lèmene and incorporates several districts and villages occupies approx. 18 km of the coastline. The old main centre is concentrated around the cathedral and from this, branch out various districts. Acclaimed tourist resort, its economy is also devoted to fishing.
The foundation of the center probably dates back to the I century B.C. and the discovery of several artifacts tend to support this theory. It was the main port area of the nearby town of Julia Concordia Sagittaria, and gave shelter to the people at the time of the Lombard invasions. In the early Middle Ages, the whole centre was surrounded by fortified walls. At the beginning of the XIII century, Caorle was attacked and damaged considerably by the troops from Trieste, an event that determined a period of decline. Later it submitted another attack by the Republic of Genoa, to which followed the invasion by Napoleon and a period of Hapsburg domination.

Attractions:
- the Cathedral, dedicated to St. Stephen, built at the beginning of the XI century, features a simple façade and three naves. It is preceded by a characteristic Bell Tower surmounted by a circular cone and interrupted only by a small balcony with mullioned windows. Inside are preserved precious works, including a XII or XIII century golden sculpture in Venetian-Byzantine style, a Last Supper of the artist Lazzarini and a precious Piety in gilded wood;
- the Shrine of Our Lady of the Angel, rebuilt in the XVII century, is decorated with frescoes. Inside are preserved a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, a Baroque altar and a sculpture by Andrea dell'Aquila;
- the Church of the Resurrection in Baroque style in the district of Ca 'Cottoni;
- the Ecclesiastical Museum. Famous for six tables depicting the Apostles dating from the XIV century, a XIV century processional Cross and the Shrine of Santo Stefano;
- the Lagoon.
