Egadi Islands

Description

The Aegadian Archipelago is composed by three main islands, Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo, and two large reefs, Maraone and Formica; it is set in front of the city of Trapani, off the northwest cost of Sicily.
They are blessed with lovely coastlines immersed in glorious crystal-clear water. The islands, which are known to have been inhabited since prehistoric times (indeed, it is thought that Levanzo and Favignana formed part of the main island of Sicily in the Palaeolithic times), witnessed a very important event in Antiquity: in these waters the Carthaginian fleet was defeated by the Roman one during the First Punic War (241 B.C.).
Local gastronomic specialties are based on couscous, tuna fish, swordfish and botargo.
