Villarosa is a town in the province of Enna, already mentioned during the XVI century with the name of San Giacomo di Bombinetto, destroyed during the earthquake of 1693. The modern town was founded in the XVIII century by Placido Notarbartolo, duke of Villarosa, with the name of San Giacomo di Villarosa. The town spread considerably during the second half of the XIX century, thanks to the exploitation of the nearby sulphur mines.
The rectangular layout of the town was planned with mathematical precision by the painter and architect Rosa Ciotti. Among the most important sites of interest, we have to mention the Church of San Giacomo, Palazzo Ducale, the Clock Tower, the Museum of Peasant and Mining Culture and the Museum of Memory at Villa Lucrezia.
