Limone Piemonte

Description

The origins of the town's name is uncertain: probably it derives from the greek word "Leimon" (grazing) or Old Provençal "Li mount "(the mountains) or maybe from the Celt "Limos"(elm tree). It is a ski and summer resort located in the center of Val Vermignaga in a natural amphitheater on the road through the Col de Tende, which leads to France. The municipality is located at the confluence of the streams San Giovanni and Vermenagna.
Even though mentioned for the first time in a document dating from the late XII century, in Roman times in this area there was already a coach station, a compulsory stop along the way crossing the Alps, of which some sections are still paved. In the X century it was attacked by the Saracens, later its inhabitants became allies of the Marquis of Saluzzo and at the beginning of the XIII century it became an independent municipality. Occupied by the Anjou, the town remained under their influence for approximately nine years, until it was ceded to the Counts of Ventimiglia and the Lascaris Family. Once it was associated with the county of Tenda, Limone Piemontese experienced a period of economic prosperity thanks to its extraordinary location and in the second half of the XVI century it became part of the possessions of the Savoy. The opening of the road tunnel and the presence of the railroad accelerated the development of the area into a famous international tourist resort. In the XX century it was equipped with ski plants and tracks and prospered a large urban development.

Not to miss

- the Parish of St. Peter in Chains, dating from the XIV century, is a stone building in late Gothic style. The façade is embellished by a XV century fresco depicting the Deposition, located on the portal. It is flanked by a Bell tower of the XII century, which is all that remains of the original church. In the adjoining rectory, whose façade is embellished with a sundial, houses valuable paintings, including "The Adoration of the Magi Kings" by Andrea Celesti.
- the Oratory of St. Anthony
- the Church of the Capuchin Monastery of the XVII century which features a valuable fresco on the façade.
- the Chapel of St. John the Baptist
- Porta Genoa, the ancient gateway located in the medieval walls, the only one still visible today.
- the Fountain of St. Peter in Chains with features that date back to the XVI century.
- the ancient Roman Road.
