Castelvetrano - Selinunte

Description

Castelvetrano, whose name derives from the Latin "Castellum Veteranum" (the veterans' castle) is a town in the province of Trapani, risen in a place where there were some pre-existent settlings down.
Not too far from the town it is possible to visit the Archaeological Park of Selinunte, ancient Greek colony, founded in VII century b.C. by settlers from Megara Iblea: here, over an almost deserted area the ruins of five ancient temples can be admired and one of which, Temple E (also called Temple of Hera) has been re-erected. The finest metopes are now preserved at the National Archaeological Museum in Palermo, except the Efebo from Selinunte, which is preserved in the local Museum of Castelvetrano.
The norman XII century church of SS. Trinità (Holy Trinity), the XV century church of San Domenico, with its nude façade, the church of San Giovanni Battista and the XIX century Thetre of Selinus, with its original stage, worth a visit.
