Throughout the area there are both cycle-paths and trails suitable for mountain-bikes. Some of the walks bestloved by Triestines are also open to cyclists, such as the Napoleonica and the coastal walk at Barcola. The cross-border tracks are especially popular because of the varied countryside and visitor attractions: these go from the Traversata Muggesana, which takes you over the border and along the Slovene littoral, to the stretch (partly on the road) linking Opicina to Sezana with a stop at the historic stables of Lipizza.
One especially popular route is the cycle and pedestrian trail named after the famous Triestine cyclist Giordano Cottur. This was created from a stretch of the old railway line which until 1959 connected the secondary railway station of San Marzio to Erpelle (Hrpelje). From via Orlandini to Draga S. Elia the track leads through Italy before then continuing in Slovenia to Divaccia. You can pick up this trail by starting from the Carso, that is the section of the Napoleonica from Opicina going towards Basovizza before then descending in the direction of the Val Rosandra where you meet the ex-railway.
Mountain-bike enthusiasts have at their disposal an extensive network of routes over the Carso, where endurance relay races are organized along prepared tracks, such as the Carso 24 hour. The Traversata Mediterranea from Aurisina to Val Rosandra offers superb views, often over the sea, throughout its 30-kilometre length.
Point of interest
Lovers of long-distance cycling (but without ascents!) can reach Opicina from the city centre comfortably seated on the tram. The conductor will help you to put you bike onto the front of the tram (it holds three) so you can enjoy the view without the effort.
