Liberty Style

Liberty or Art Nouveau was an artistic and architectural movement that blossomed in the nineteenth century especially in Avola. Its spread coincided with the rapid economic growth leading to a still evident construction renewal as many buildings' frontages, out of the hexagonal perimeter, prove. The leading role was played by stonecutters who, by modelling the ibleian white stone, created Liberty's curvy and sinuous lines. Many houses' fronts are adorned with floral-inspired motifs, local fruits, girls' faces and zoomorphic patterns. Interior decoration was made in accordance with the taste of the time as well. Worthy of mention was Raffaele Scalia who painted stunning vaults. Among the numerous buildings constructed in this style, worthy of note are those situated in Pellico Street 1, in Umberto I Square as well as in Corso Vittrio Emanuele 115 (Corsico Palace).
