Church of St. Giovanni Baptist

Trieste square, where once was Siracusa Door, is dominated by St. Giovanni's Church. The reconstruction took place in 1700 and blessed in 1744, the church was later reshaped in 1772 becoming again house of worship in 1852. The beautiful frontage was unfinished whereas the three naves, divided by Corinthian pillars and recently restored, are ornamented with Neoclassical white and light blue stuccoes. On the nave's dome there are scened depicting Baptist's life by Gregorio Scalia. The latter was the author of the aisles altars paintings as well. On the main altar there is the 18th century piece with Jesus Baptism in the Jordan river; valuable are the five paintings representing St. Corado's stories, scenes of his life, from the ancient town. Worthy of mention is the organ built in 1866 by Sebastiano Calcerano Platania of Acireale.
