Monteriggioni

Description

Monteriggioni is a fortification built by the Republic of Siena in order to defend the Via francigena against the Florentine Guelph army. It represents a rare example of medieval military architecture, with its fourteen turrets crowning a circular surrounding wall.
Once entered the Porta Franca or Romea, you will the large Rome square with an ancient cistern in the center; the Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is located on the right hand.
Gardens, orchards and olive trees surround the external walls of the town.
Abbadia isola is one of the most ancient district of Abbadia Isola, with a beautiful and powerful abbey; Strove, located not too far from Abbadia Isola, is dominated by the ancient Parish Church; Etruscan necropolis were found in Scrana (IV century BC).
