Montecorvino Pugliano

Description

Montecorvino Pugliano, set in the Picentini Mounts area, was probably founded by the refugees of the town of Picentia, destroyed by the Romans for having supported hannbal during the Punic Wars. According to some, the placename derives from the Roman consul Marcus Valerius Corvinus, while according to others, from the words "mons and chorak", meaning "volcanic area" (in fact a sulphureous spring is still visible here).
In 1820 Montecorvino Pulciano separed itself from Montecorvino Rovella.
Among the most important monument of the town, we have to mention the Convent of Santa Maria (actually town hall), the small Church of Madonna dell'Arco, the Church of Santa Tecla, patron saint of the town, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, the Church of San Vito, with a beautiful wooden XII century crucifix and the Church of San Bernardino, in Baroque style.
