Description

Bronte is located on the Western slopes of the Mount Etna; it was inhabited since the ancient times by the Siculi, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans. Its name derives from the Greek and means "rumble, thunder", referring to the Etna's eruptions, that destroyed the town several times.
In 1520 Charles V united the twenty-four hamlets of the area, forming the town of Bronte. In 1799 King Ferdinand rewarded admiral Horatio Nelson with the title of Duke of Bronte for the help he had provided him during the Neapolitan Revolution.
The most relevant monuments are the baroque style Colleggio Capizzi erected during the XVIII century, the XVI century Chiesa Madre dedicated to the Trinity, the Middle Age Chiesa di S. Giovanni dated 1580, and the Chiesa dell'Annunziata, built in 1535, preserving a beautiful sandstone portal.
Finally Bronte is also known for the production of pistachio nuts.
