The Lowland and the Western Pre-Alps

Close to the border with the Province of Varese is a wide area sloping from the last slopes of the hills to the Lombardy Plain. Here there are many industrial and handicraft centres, but also large agricultural and wooded areas (such as the pinewoods between Appiano and Tradate, now preserved as a park). Historical sites include medieval churches (the frescoes of San Giorgio at Lurago Marinone are very important), villas from the eighteenth and nineteenth century, sites of industrial archeological interest: Cassina Rizzardi was the site of the region's first steam filature (silk spinner). In the northern part of the area, at the border with Switzerland, in Canton of Ticino, there are opportunities for easy walks.
