San Paolo Maggiore Basilica
-
San Paolo Maggiore Basilica stands over the Greek-roman forum built on the remains of the Dioscuri temple; there are still two Corinthian columns with their architraves jutting out of the facade. It has a Latin cross layout with three aisles. The nave's ceiling, damaged in the second world war bombings, keeps remains of the Stories of San Peter'and Paul's frescoes. In the sacristy there are some seventeenth century pieces of furniture and frescoes representing Angels, Allegories, Virtues and San Paul's conversion by Francesco Solimena.
In the nave the statue of the Guardian Angel by Antonio Vaccaro stands; it was carved in 1712 for the homonymous chapel that in those years was rebuilt by Francesco Solimena and that was replaced with a statue of Christ. The High altar was made by the marble master Antonio de Luca on the drawing of Ferdinando Fuga. In 1962, during renovations remains of the primary temple and even a cemetery were found.
