Carnival
-
One of the liveliest events of the year is the carnival in Muggia. Not only do local people take part in the festival but so do thousands of visitors. Festivities begin in the cathedral square on the Thursday before Shrove Tuesday with the coronation of the Carnival King. The climax is on Sunday when allegorical carnival floats parade through the centre. These floats have been built painstakingly by the eight carnival groups of enthusiasts over several months beforehand. The week proceeds with a series of events - an enormous barbecue in the square, the Ballo della Verdura (the vegetable ball), evenings of dancing in the by-ways of old Muggia town centre and finishing with the enactment of the Carnival King's funeral on Ash Wednesday.
In Opicina too there is a Carnival procession organized on the Saturday afternoon to celebrate the Carsic carnival Kraški Pust. It is inaugurated by a stroll through town of their Majesties the King and Queen who arrive in the famous early twentieth-century tram from the centre of Trieste.
