Budelli

Description

It is an island, part of the archipelago of Maddalena which has been incorporated into the province of Olbia-Tempio. Located in the North of Sardinia, near the Strait of Bonifacio, the municipal territory features about 12 km of coastline and is dominated by Mount Budello, which is the highest point in the area, from where it is possible to admire a superb view over the beautiful islands of Santa Maria and Razzoli. Budelli is famous worldwide for being the unique beach location in the South-Eastern Europe that features a particular pink color sand. The pink beach owes its color to the presence of fragments of shells and corals, mixed to the fine sand and the crystal clear waters that emerge between large granite rocks, that make the place even more charming. At present, the only inhabitant is a guardian.
The island was probably inhabited since Prehistoric times and was aleady known in the Roman Ages, with the named "Insulae Cuniculariae". During the XVIII century, Budelli submitted the dominion of the Savoy. In 1793 it was the scenario of the famous defeat of Napoleon and his army against the Savoy. About twenty years ago, the local authorities was decided the ban on bathing in the waters of the pink sand beach, to protect this corner of paradise from the damage caused by tourists with the continuous anchoring of boats in the nearby. This decision has enabled the area to regain its original natural balance.
