Ameglia

Description

Center in the province of La Spezia, situated near the border with Tuscany, not far from both the main city of this Province and Carrara. It occupies the summit of a hill on the right side of the river Magra and is part of the Regional Natural Park of Monte Marcello-Magra. The settlement consists of a primitive square of houses clustered around the Acropolis, that is a cylindrical tower and the Town Hall, surrounded by a fortification wall.
The origins are ancient: the village dates from the IV century B.C. and was an important trading centre, as evidenced by the remains of a necropolis discovered in the area. Even in Roman times, Ameglia was a strategic center, however it is in the early Middle Ages, when it reached its peak of importance in the political and economic aims. Vescovato in the Middle Ages, the town was the fortified residence of the Bishops of Luni. In the XIII century the tower of the castle, the walls and the port were built. In the following years it submitted the dominion of Lords and other local families, such as the Doria and the Visconti and over the centuries, the settlement was often purchased or sold. In the XV century it was acquired by Banco di San Giorgio, in the early 1800s it passed to the territory of Lerici and, finally, the Kingdom of Italy.

Not to miss:
Oratory of Our Lady of the Assumption built in the XVIII century.
Church of St. Vincent in the historic center. Entitled to Saints Vincent and Anastasius. It was rebuilt in 1932 on an existing church that dates back to the XV century.
The Castrum, the castle and the adjoining circular tower were built in 1174. All together, they feature a rectangular shape building, which is protected by a trapezoidal curtain wall.
The pre-Roman necropolis in the village of Cafaggio.
