Ferdinando Principiano estate belongs to the Principiano family since the beginning of the twentieth century. Americo Principiano founded the winery in the Fifties and now he's responsible for the vineyards; his son, Ferdinando, handles the vinification and the aging of wines. In 2004 Ferdinando decided to rethink the philosophy and the conception of his winemaking: in order to be more adherent to nature and to Langhe's land features he removed chemical plant foods, weed killers, desiccation agents and chemical anti-mould. Today he only uses natural yeasts, working to obtain from eight hectograms to one and one half chilograms of yeld for every plant and no more; he chooses fermentations without temperature control to give into environment provides for strictly manual re-assemblements. These are the ingredients of Ferdinando Principiano new wave: various actions to obtain wines even more linked and well accorded to Langhe's genetic legacy.
Four vineyards today represent Principiano's treasure, totalling approximately ten hectares; each area was specially chosen as an excellent location for its particular varietal planting. The Nebbiolo is planted in Serralunga in the valuable Boscareto area: the vines in this historical vineyard are more than fifty years old. Then Le Coste, alike in Monforte, a small vineyard that gives birth to a powerful and robust Nebbiolo. The Barbera vines, located in Monforte, average sixty years old and Principiano's vineyard here is in the Pian Romualdo cru. The fourth vineyard, which is also located in Monforte, consists of forty years old vines of Dolcetto planted in the Sant'Anna zone.
