Description

The history of the Pietro Torti Winery is tightly intertwined with the history of Montecalvo Versiggia, the small town in which the winery is located. Montecalvo Versiggia has a total area of 1.116 ha, with hills that slope down from 479 to 175 mt.: the nature of the soil and the climate make perfect conditions for the growing of the vines, which has here a long-established tradition.

The first written evidence of this tradition dates back to the XVIII century: a document from 1723 attests vine growing activities in Castelrotto (one of the hamlets in the Montecalvo Versiggia area). In 1906, the vineyards reached 34% of the farmed area, while today they have reached 80%.

The Torti family has been growing its own grapes in Montecalvo Versiggia through many generations. Montecalvo Versiggia is in the heart of the Oltrepò Pavese region, a territory with a centuries-long tradition of vine growing and wine production. Yet in 1825, Giuseppe Acerbi wrote about the various Oltrepò Pavese varieties of grapevines in his important treatise of ampelography ("Delle viti italiane" - "About Italian grapevines"). The Oltrepò Pavese region is undoubtedly one of the most ancient European vine growing areas and the word "terroir" is really the right one to understand the peculiar characteristics of this territory and its great wines.

Our vineyards are partly new (vine density: 4500 vine/ha) and partly 40 years old (vine density: 3000 vine/ha). The soil is for the most part clayey (with a strong tendency to cracking), compact, poor in organic substance and rich in potassium. Inter-row grassing has always been a standard practice, as well as the use of products with minimum environmental impact. Vines are trained using the Guyot system with a maximum of 10 or 12 buds per vine. The climatic conditions are very well suited for the production of full-flavoured white wines and full-bodied red wines with a great ageing potential.
