... Once upon a time, there was a pub which the Bolzano people called 'Red Eagle'. This was in about 1870. Travelling sales people, poets, philosophers and also simple people enjoyed socialising, eating and drinking together. One of them must have been Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, because how else could it have been that the lounge got its name? The pub 'Red Eagle' in the heart of Bolzano was not only visited by aestetics. During the war, the strategists met here to make their plans. To ensure that only the right people sat together at a certain table, they decided to use a code word: 'birdy'.

In the meantime, this code word is no longer a secret. Nowadays, the inhabitants of Bolzano have all heard about the code name and nearly everyone knows what it was used for. A good glass of wine with friends, an enjoyable business lunch in one of the historic rooms or a romantic candlelight dinner in the stylish Biedermaier lounges (Biedermaier, literally 'honest man' or pretty bourgeois), in the 'Rosenzimmer' or the booth in the upper floor. And because the fact remains that for more than 100 years not only the Bolzano people have chosen to meet in the 'birdy', it would appear that there must be something special in this place. Whereas in former times, the 'birdy' was a code name, today it is a word for 'seeing and being seen'.

And if you have drunk a glass of wine too many or feel enchanted by the ambience or atmosphere and the exciting people one can meet there, it might just be possible to see a red eagle circling above the house ...
