Il Borro Estate, a magnificent country resort an hour south of Florence, lies in Tuscany at the center of a triangle, which is formed by Arezzo, Florence and Siena, and has been owned by the Ferragamo Family since 1993.
Il Borro estate has been meticulously restored to offer a country resort with luxury farmhouse accommodations for the most "discerning travellers", while adhering strictly to the traditions of rural Tuscany. Il Borro estate's main centrepiece is the wonderful 11th-Century medieval village, complete with farmhouses and other luxury country-style accommodations. The village was all almost wiped out by German forces in WWII, who bombed the hamlet's main villa before retreating from the British Army, who cleaned them out from Tuscany. In the 1950s the property passed into the hands of Duke Amedeo of Savoia of Aosta, who used it as its Tuscany wild game hunting reserve, before selling it to the Ferragamo Family in the early '90s.
Il Borro is an act of faith that takes us back in time.
Enjoy a private home in Tuscany with the benefits of a hotel. Il Borro estate has all of its exclusive farmhouses and villa accommodations ready for our guests: apartments are quite simple in their own design but quite comfortable with all the amenities: Tuscany's rural life meets world's luxury living. The Ferragamo Family had a good feeling about the estate: when the Aosta Dukes offered il Borro for sale, the Ferragamos did not hesitate to buy it, having a clear vision of a nice, cosy retreat for their large family and an exclusive vacation resort for others coming to Tuscany. Since then, the family has restored, rather than modernized, the estate buildings: countryside farmhouses and village buildings, a row of villa apartments, shops and a church, all with wooden floors, earthen stone walls and terracotta roofs.
WINE
The estate, which extends over 700 hectares currently has 40 hectares of that land dedicated to vines. The soil has an excellent structure with a good sandy composition which denotes itself to the growing of five varieties of vine: Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot. From the blend of the best grapes of these five varieties Il Borro produces three optimum wines: "Il Borro", "Pian di Nova" and "Polissena".Winemaking at Il Borro dates back to 1760 when the estate was under the rule of the noble Medici-Tornaquinci Family, since 1999 however the Ferragamo Family in conjunction with enologist Niccolo D'Afflitto have developed the winemaking process and now in 2007 are proud to open their new state of the art winery.
EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL
In addition to wine, olive oil from the centuries old groves that practically cover the hillsides has represented an extraordinary resource since the Middle Ages. The estate itself boasts over five thousand olive trees which every year produce a robust yet pure Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
