Within the Region of Campania, just 6 kilometres from Avellino, rests the small medieval town of Capriglia Irpina. Situated like a fortress on a hill 575 meters above sea level, the town is dominated by the castle of Prince Caracciolo Carafa. The town is known as the birth place of "Gian Pietro Carafa" (Pope Paol IV- Pontiff from 1555 til 1559) and is honoured within the splendid cornice in the Regional Park of Partenio. The wonderful panorama that is enjoyed from these hills are the most beautiful that Irpina has to offer. From high above the mountain and on a clear day, it is possible to see the nearby Golf of Naples.
Within this context, we find the holiday farmhouse La Serenella, a name chosen by the proprietor, Carmine Spiniello in 1998 the year in which the complex was in inaugurated. The Agriturismus (holiday farmhouse) had already been an idea of his father, Prof. Domizio Spiniello. And yet many years prior to this, the grandfather, Carmine Guerriero had imagined the serenity of the area and the possibility of combining agriculture, nature, and hospitality.
The working farm and the antique farm villa date back to 1850 as is noted by a small monument at the entrance. Today, the farmhouses are no longer suitable for farming and have been remodelled, trying to maintain the original structure intact. They are now available for guests. Nothing has been newly constructed, and this is a reason to be proud.
The agricultural aspect is enriched by the production of extra virgin olive oil, white and red wines, hazel nuts, vegetables, fresh fruits, marmalade and home made liqueurs.
The green land of Irpinia - that is what the Province of Irpinia is typically called - "Hirpus", or rather wolf on the tongue of the Osci. From the first settlers here on this land, they have always been a unique asset in terms of nature, culture, hospitality, and cooking.
In this area, it is well worth staying either in summer or in winter.
For our quests, we have reserved six rooms and an apartment for a total of 12 beds.
The furnishings are complete: central heating, linens, orthopaedic beds, privates bathes, and T.V. Domestic animals are not allowed either in the bed rooms nor the restaurant.
The décor has maintained the context of the landscape and countryside, and the suggestive panorama that is viewed upon opening a window is fabulous: intense green in their various tones during the summer and candid, snow white in Winter when the snow falls and carpets the entire landscape like a cloak.
During the summer, one can take advantage of the panoramic terraces, the solarium with lounge chairs and the swimming pool.
During the days of grape harvest, as well as olive and fruit harvest, guests can actually participate in working in the fields.
For the sport enthusiast:
4 km away- sport fishing, tennis, soccer, gym, sauna, swimming pool, and indoor baby park with heating. At 20 km away, there is an equestrian stable for horse back ridding.
It is a point of reference for any type of ceremony, party, anniversary, business lunch or dinner or just pleasure. From the outside alone, the structure has an austere look as it rests upon the dynamic rocks of its base. This is an indication of the culinary talents within. Once at the table, it becomes well understood that the cuisine guarantees admirable respect of the Irpina tradition.
There are many suggested dishes:
fusilli alla Serenella, cavatelli with beans, trofie all'ortolana, minestra maritata, stuffed papaccelle, pork with green peppers, delicately fried pork, tripe, chestnuts, castagnaccio, chick peas, liver and onions, stuffed pork rind, potatoes and cod fish, rabbit cacciatore, local fresh bread, roast; each dish is available based on the season of the products, guaranteeing freshness and prepared with products grown on the farm itself, and enhanced with extra virgin olive oil. An excellent addition to the meal is the array of wines renowned world wide such as the white "Fiano di Avellino" DOCG (seal of quality) and "Greco di Tufo" or the red DOCG wine "Taurasi" and "Aglianico d' Irpinia" IGT.
From April till September, when nature gives its best, the indoor dining hall is transferred outside, where, from the gazebo to the patio, guests can really appreciate not only the cuisine but also the colors and fragrance of nature.
We would be delighted to welcome you and prepare for you the extraordinary products of our land, hoping to give you moments and tastes that you will always remember. And please excuse us if at times, due to the number of guests, we cannot always give you the personal attention we would like.
