Description

The Deltetto company was founded in 1953 by Carlo Deltetto in Canale, the historical centre of the Roero, a land separated from the Langhe by the river Tanaro. In a territory of great grape-growing tradition, Carlo immediately adopted a philosophy concerning the quality of the traditional vines like the Nebbiolo and Barbera without neglecting the Arneis and Favorita whites in their perfect habitat on the steep hills of the Roero.

In 1977, fresh with his diploma from the Oenological school in Alba, Carlo's son Antonio arrived on the scene giving a new input into the company with different experiments in the cellar and a new way of working in the vine-yards but with maximum respect for tradition.

Today the company is still family run and there are now approx 20 hectares of vine-yards in the boroughs of Canale, Santo Stefano Roero and Castellinaldo. The production is equally divided between the reds and whites but with the Roero, the most important red in the area made with Nebbiolo grapes, and the Roero Arneis stand out from the crowd. Thanks to acknowledgements for the D.O.C.G. 2005 harvest, these wines are now considered to be amongst the most important in Italy.

With the passing of time the desire for something new has not waned and there are now an Arneis raisin wine, a late harvested Barbera, a great Barolo and last but not least, three spumanti wines made exclusively by the company and including a Rosé made from Nebbiolo grapes.

The Roero has an antique land that is millions of years old, dominated by sandstone, sedimentary rocks of mixed marine origin made up of limestone, clay and naturally, sand which makes it soft and permeable.

This yellowish Astian sand goes back to the middle Pliocene age due to the erosion caused by the deviation of the River Tanaro that made the "Rocche" (deep calanques that are typical of the Roero). The wines that come from the land of Roero are full bodied with elegance, floral and fruity with mineral notes.

The Langhe, land to the right of the River Tanaro, is older and goes back to the Miocene age. It is dominated by marl, sedimentary rocks of limestone and clay that are of marine origin and are bluish or white to grey. The red wines that give this land feature for the great structure and power and need a long ageing to better emphasize the typicalness.
