With the fall of the Roman Empire there was the beginning of Ostia's decadence. The first excavations with a scientific purpose started with Pio VII and continued with Pio IX in 1800.
Recently there was the discovery of mosaics, paintings, mitrei, tombs, thermae, roads and an amphiteatre that, still now, is the venue of many relevant cultural events during summer.
