Gastronomy on the Sorrento Peninsula

In the Land of the Sirens, where Ulysses challenged their enchanting song and lured his death on the rocks and where olive and citrus trees fill the outline, a local gastronomy tradition praises important names.

A gourmet Eden, Vico Equense is famous for its "pizza al metro" (a rectangular shape, meter long pizza), an idea of Gigino Amatura, in vogue since the fifties, who started to propose this format to offer a different measure cut for the gourmand or less. Other specialities are the local cheeses such as burrini (partially filled with butter, the small caciotte, the goat cheese caprigneti and the famous Provolone del Monaco DOP.

Sant'Agnello, rich of citrus cultivations, is the "Gold" Reign of the Lemon of Sorrento, whilst from the olive trees, the locals obtain a prestigious olive oil DOP "Penisola Sorrentina".

What can we say about Sorrento, the pearl of the peninsula ? First producers of the famous "Limoncello" liqueur, an excellent digestive elisir to taste really cold in special small cooled glasses. A great dessert is its combination with a Baba cake. The typical local dishes are: ravioli filled with lobster; the legendary potato dumplings (gnocchi) with tomato sauce and topped with stringy mozzarella cheese, the "follovielli" (dried grapes preserved in grapevine leaves) or the "bebè" (a baby size sweet caciocavallo cheese). Other local specialities are the famous walnuts and the blond oranges of Sorrento.

The production of olive oil in Massa Lubrense, Piano di Sorrento and Meta, has become an art and Massa, also known as the city of 1000 oil mills proposes an itinerary with all the different stages from the harvest to the pressing.

Nerano and Marina del Cantone, two enchanting beach resorts and districts of Massa Lubrense, feature a selection of World famous restaurants that propose famous delicatessens like: spaghetti alla Nerano, with fried courgettes and sweet provolone cheese sauce, or tagliatelle with prawn and lemon sauce.

Up in the Lattari hills and facing onto the peninsula of Sorrento, Gragnano famous for the production of an excellent pasta, sold and known World-wide with its name, to guarantee the quality over the last 500 years. Naturally a special course of pasta of Gragnano must be combined with an important Gragnano DOC "Penisola Sorrentina" sparkling red wine.
