Description

The town's name is a combination of the word valley and the name of a neighboring town Torgnon. It is one of the main towns of the valley, located on the border with Switzerland and extends between the Valpelline and Val d'Ayas, up to the slopes of Mount Cervino. The town lies at over 1500 meters high and consists of several districts located along the creek Marmore. The main centre is Paquier, whilst between the other outstands Breuil Cervinia that in recent years has become a Winter tourist resort of prestige. The homes are located on a steep slope with a gradient of high altitude from 1330 m of Moulin to 2200 m of Breuil Cervinia. The resort features 45 km of slopes and tracks with artificial snow for the facilities and a cableway, ski lifts and chair lifts and is well connected with nearby Cervinia. During the Summer months you can take walks and hikes.
The discovery in the 70's of some petroglyphs evidence that the valley was inhabited since the Iron Age. In medieval times it gained importance for the trading through Col du Teodulo. The town belonged to the Lords of Cly and then to the Savoy. The town gained notoriety during the XIX century thanks to the Mount Cervino, which became a favorite climbing attraction for the particular structural characteristics and difficulties of the ascent.

Not to miss:

The Parish church, entitled to St. Anthony, is located in the town's square. It was built in 1856 on an existing building of the XV century. It presents an elegant façade lined with columns, decorated and topped by a pediment containing a small niche that houses a statue. The entrance is preceded by a portico embellished with columns and a carved wooden portal. The interior contains valuable frescoes. The adjacent bell tower is embellished with mullioned windows and topped by a spire topped with a cross.
The Parish Museum of Sacred Arts is attached to the church of St. Anthony.
The Chapel of Santa Barbara in Maen.
The Chapel of St. Crispin and St. Crispiniano in Crepin.
The Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Caramel and San Leonardo in Cheperon.
The Chapel of Notre Dames de la Garde.
The Chapel of St. Rocco and Our Lady of Sorrows in Chaloz.
The Chapel of St. Rita of Cascia in Bringaz.
