Description

The name derives from the Latin "summa campania" (highest lands).
Municipality in the province of Verona, located in a hilly area, not far from Lake Garda and the Po valley, thanks to the mild climate, is ideal for the cultivation of fruit trees and vines, that produces excellent wines, such as: Garda, Bardolino and Bianco di Custoza.
Important finds from the Stone Age and the remains of pile dwellings evidence that the area of Sommacampagna was already populated in very ancient times. The Romans colonized the region, building some of their major roads, including Via Postumia and Via Gallica, and encouraging the division of the farmlands in centuries. These territories, after the Fall of the Roman Empire, submitted the invasions and subsequent dominion of several peoples, such as: Huns, Lombards and Franks. The town is mentioned for the first time in a document dating back to 930, when it belonged to the Della Scala Family and, over the years, it was ceded to several landowners, including Andrea degli Specchi. Later subjected to the French and the Austrians, the district of Custoza became famous for being the scenario of the battles, in the mid-XIX century, of the Wars of Independence.
