San Giovanni a Piro is an ancient mediaeval town in the Province of Salerno. It stands on a hill 450 metres above sea level. Fascinating sights are the Italo-Greek Abbey built by Basilian monks and dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, and the 17th-century Church of Saint Cajetan of Thiene in the Tornito district. The historical centre retains its mediaeval charm with wonderful stone doorways, round arches, quaint stairways and wrought-iron balconies.A wealth of interesting flora and fauna in the surrounding countryside makes this one of the most precious spots in Cilento e Vallo di Diano National Park.
