Description

A municipality in the province of Turin, located near to the plain of Vaude, on the border with the Canavese area, San Francesco al Campo is washed by the streams of Banna and Fisca and includes within its territories the Natural Reserve of Vauda.
The area was inhabited since ancient times, evidence attested by the discovery of numerous findings attributed to the Salassi, which date back to the V century B.C. and to others that testify the presence of the Romans of the II century. The first settlements of the plateau Vauda date back to early Middle Ages, when the territories belonged to the Arduino Family. In the XIII century, the Marquis of Monferrato took over the domain of the entire Grande Vauda and possessed the territories till the end of the same century, when one of his heirs Giovanni I of Monferrato, died and left his lands to his wife Margherita of Savoy. Margherita reigned personally and even though a woman, was recognized with full rights by the Savoy. The same family ruled until the first half of the XVI century, when during the war between France and Spain, these lands were invaded by the French.

Attractions:
- the Parish Church of San Francesco, a two storey building with its façade embellished with niches divided by columns that host several valuable statues and surmounted by a pediment. It is flanked by an imposing Bell Tower with a square base, almost totally incorporated into the structure of the church. The tower is not monotonous as it is covered by squares plasters of different sizes, enriched by the presence of a clock and a bell chamber divided by columns. Inside it features a circular apse and is richly decorated with stucco and frescoes;
- the Church of the Assumption with a large sail shaped facade, surmounted by a pediment and preceded by an arched portico. The Bell Tower, incorporated into the structure, features a square based building, that at the base features a small balcony and is topped by a spire shaped roof;

- the Church of Saint Jerome.
