Description

Rodi Garganico is a small town of the province of Foggia, built on the top of a rocky promontory at the North edge of the Gargano area. High up on a rocky spur, with two stretches of sand along its sides, it is situated at a few kilometers east of the Lake of Varano.
It is a famous seaside resort with approx. 3000 inhabitants, that grow up to 30000 in the Summer months. Lido del Sole (Sunny beach), is one of the most attended beach areas of the Region.
It is also important for its citrus fruit cultivations, known world-wide as "il giardino del Gargano" (garden of the Gargano).
The city centre keeps its face of the Middle Ages with narrow and steep alleys and with its white houses, similar to all the other towns along the coast of Apulia.
The fortified walls of this period are actually the best preserved in the whole area.
The antique origins of the town offer traces of 1200 b.C. It was originally a Cretan colony, then Greek and later Rodian. In the Middle Ages it was subject to depredation on behalf of the Venetians that wanted to punish the inhabitants for their loyalty to Federico II. Not to miss, besides the Castle are: the Church of Saint Peter with statues of '1500 and the Byzantine steeple of the Sanctuary of the Madonna Libera.
