Description

The town's name, in the opinion of some local historians, derives from the agreement (in Italian "patto") between the inhabitants of several pre-existing settlements, from which the center seems to have been founded, while for others, it is linked to the particular location and means plateau or plain. Municipality in the province of Sassari, located close to Mount Lerno, the territory of Pattada also includes the Lake of Lerno and an unspoiled environment, where rare species of fauna find their natural habitat. The trails and paths through the forests propose ideal excursions on foot or horseback. The area is also particularly rich in historical and archaeological sites, while at present it is famous for the production of handmade knives and gastronomic delicatessen such as fine cheeses, honey and local patisserie.
The territory of Pattada was inhabited since the Prehistoric times, as evidenced by the tombs and exhibits found, that date back to the Nuragic Ages. Pattada was colonized by the Romans, that during their domination built an important road, of which three miles are still visible and in excellent condition, near the old centre. The original town center was created by the merging of several villages to ensure the residents a stronger protection from enemy attacks. During the Middle Ages the town belonged to the Parish of Lerrone and then it was assigned to the Giudicato (County) of Arborea. With the invasion of the Aragonesi, it became part of the Signoria (Lordship) of the Oliva Family, who ruled till the abolition of feudalism.
