Description

The town's name apparently derives from Esaronensi, a Nuragic tribe, who lived in the area at those times. Municipality in the province of Nuoro, located in the Eastern part of Sardinia, in the valley of the river Cedrino, not far from the sea and the Marina of Orosei, a stretch of 15 km of coastline with beautiful beaches, which are characterized by fine sand, alternating to cliffs that plunge into the emerald waters of the sea. The local economy, once based solely on agriculture, now finds income from the cultivation of vines and the production of fine wines, the exploitation of marble from the local quarries and also from tourism. The old town is characterized by narrow streets, overlooked by white limestone houses and buildings of the XIX century.
Even though the area was inhabited since the Nuragic period, exhibits and evidence attest that the original town center was founded by the Romans in the II century A.D. in a particularly favorable location. Known as Fanum Orisi, it became Urisè in the period in which it was incorporated into the Giudicato (County) of Gallura. Under the domination of Pisa, the town flourished in a period of great development, due to the presence of a natural harbor that allowed easy trading possibilities. Due to its not easy defendable location, the town was frequently attacked by the Saracens throughout the centuries, the last raid goes back to the early XIX century.

Attractions:
- the Parish Church of St. James the Apostle, built between the XVII and XVIII centuries in Arab style, features a spectacular façade, divided into two tiers, of which the lower level is significantly higher than the top one. The building is enlivened by small niches with columns and pediments and is preceded by a high staircase. Inside is preserved a XVIII century wooden baptismal font;
- the Church of Saint Anthony Abbot, built in local stone between the XIII and XV centuries and features a single nave plan with a porch along the left side. It houses a precious wooden statue of the Saint and beautiful frescoes showing scenes from the life of Christ;
