Description

Nembro is a town in the province of Bergamo, set on the right bank of the Serio river, at the entrance of the Seriana Valley. Finds dating back to the Paleolithic period (now preserved at the Museum of Natural Science in Bergamo) reveal that the area was inhabited since the ancient time. Although Nembo was mentioned for the first time in a document of 800, the discivery of some Roman money and inscriptions reveal that the area was inhabited also during the Roman Empire.
According to the most accepted theory, the place name derives from the Celtic word "nembren", meaning hill.
The Church of San Martino, dating back to the XV century and totally refurbished during the XVIII century, is really interesting. Inside it is possible to admire valuable masterpieces by Enea Salmeggia, Ponziano Loverini, Carlo Ceresa, Antonio Cifronti, Vincenzo Angelo Orelli and of his father Giuseppe.
We also have to mention the XIV century church of Madonna della Misericordia, the Church of Santissima Trinità, with an altarpiece by Palma il Giovane, the Church of Santa Maria del Borgo, with frescoes of the XV and XVI century, buil on two preexisting buildings, rediscovered during the recent restoration works in addition to some medieval tombs.
