A picturesque municipality in the province of Terni, located on a hill, from where it is possible to admire the Valdichiana and the mountains of Lazio and Tuscany. The territory is crossed by several rivers and is part of Parco del Monte Peglia e Selva di Meana, a vast area comprising three natural environments of interest for its fauna. The town is one of the few in Italy that produces saffron.
There are no certain traces that attest the foundation of the castle, however, local historians agree that it was requested by Orvieto in defense of its borders. The first certain documented evidence, that reports the existence of a settlement here, dates back to the late XII century. Monteleone submitted the domain of the nearby Orvieto for a long time, until in 1373, it passed to the Viscount of Turrena, then to the Earl of Montemarte and at the end of the XIV century, it was sold to Count Francesco Corbara by Pope Boniface IX. After the death of the last heir of the Corbara, the town was ceded to the Della Rovere, until in the XV century, the city of Orvieto, bought it back. During the last years of the XV century, the town was scenario of the disputes between the family of Bandini and the city of Orvieto, a war that ended with the loss of some land by the latter, which, however, retained the possessions of Monteleone and strengthened its defenses. In the XVII century the town was directly involved in the clashes between the Papal States and the Farnese Family and suffered extensive damage. In the XIX century, except for a short period in which it was subjected to French rule, Monteleone d'Orvieto belonged to the Pope
